One of Nike Sportswear’s biggest hits of 2011 was an Air Force 1 Low Premium cast in denim with golden accents plus all the detailing of a finely crafted pair of raw Japanese selvage.  So what happens when you take that formula and invert it, making gold the dominant color and switching denim to select accent hits?  Only good things, as evidenced by this new Nike Air Force 1 Low in Jersey Gold with Sport Red accents, a look that utilizes a denim-like twill on its underlay while smooth leather rests on top

What was a concerted effort from Nike Sportswear last season has turned into something of a mystery this spring, as VacTech construction has gone from playing a major role in the holiday shopping season to now popping up without warning or a special label.  These new Nike Air Force 1 Lows are like a pair that dropped around New Year’s, both opting for vacuum construction on the rear with sewn-on toecaps and heel tabs, and neither featuring the ‘VT’ distinction that labeled a huge number of VacTech builds in late 2011

When Sneaker News brought you images of the upcoming  Nike Air Force 1 iD samples  yesterday, all of them depicted a tonal, almost monochromatic elephant print in a variety of colors with but one single photo depicting the classic dark-on-light grey as was pioneered on the  Air Jordan III OGs .  Here’s an expanded look at that tonal grey and gumsoled approach to the Air Force 1 Low on  NIKEiD , as well as a hightop version that goes with a translucent bottom instead.  These two are quite similar, yet different enough to demonstrate some of the blocking options available on both heights when the super-limited 750-pair run opens on February 1st at midnight eastern.

A spectacular ‘Year of the Dragon’ release notwithstanding, each and every one of Nike Sportswear’s Air Force 1 offerings have seen their  construction echoed  across additional colorways.  This latest pair comes in the same tumbled front/suede back/smooth leather Swoosh combination, following in the footsteps of  Nike Air Force 1 Lows  in Lucky Green and a WMNS pair in Red Bean

The popularity of the Nike Air Force 1 ‘Workboot’ releases that debuted in the Spring 2010 season was expected; the Air Force 1, while originally a basketball shoe, had that bulk and size that made it rockable as a pair of winter boots – just keep your vision feet-level during the cold months in NYC and you’ll see quite a number of AF1s trudging around town. The leather uppers and roped work-boot laces gave those Air Force 1 Workboot releases that cool cross-over flair, but sneaker customizer Wolfstein re-imagined the Workboot Force 1 by creating a pair of Lows inspired by one of his favorites – the Red Wing 8166. He took advantage of the boot leather options on Nike iD and selected the Pecan leather with a solid Sail outsole, and put on the finishing touch with the workboot laces, the Red Wing hangtag, and the custom Red Wing insoles.

How do you keep a shoe going continuously, thirty years after its debut?  The  Nike Air Force 1 ‘s classic lines allow for a wide variety of colorblocking patterns, and this latest edition adds even more contrast by utilizing three distinct types of materials on its uppers

After absolutely zero buildup in 2011, the Nike  ‘Year of the Dragon’ collection  made some big waves early this year with designs spread from the Sportswear division all the way to Jordan Brand. And while it’s great to see some new designs get the Water Dragon theme, there’s one NSW silhouette that’s been there for the cycle of the Chinese Zodiac year in and year out, and that’s the  Nike Air Force 1 Low . The ‘Year of the Dragon’ Air Force 1 Low offers a subtle take on the theme with tonal black embroidery all over the silken uppers, a look so clean (especially from a distance) that the new ‘AF1-XXX’ gridded box might get even more attention than the shoe itself.

We’ve mentioned it more than once because there’ve been so many examples in recent weeks, but it’s hard to exaggerate the extent to which Nike Sportswear has chosen a unified simple yet satisfying approach to spring 2012′s Air Force 1 releases. The vast majority have featured super-simple colorways that are heavy on white and/or black, and this latest  Nike Air Force 1 Low  follows in the steps of several others with its use of a translucent outsole. That’s not the only carryover design element, either, as this Neutral Grey AF1 Low  utilizes the same tonal pattern  on its rear panels that gave earlier black and Cargo Khaki releases the look of sublimated camouflage.

The phrase ‘Nike Air Force 1 Bespoke’ has become synonymous with the pinnacle of personalized sneaker design, but let’s not forget that the word bespoke has its roots in handcrafted high-end fashion.  So when Chinese designer  Zhijun Wang  created an  Air Force 1 ’30th Anniversary & Year of the Dragon’  bespoke design, it wasn’t through the NIKEiD process at 21 Mercer or Nike Harajuku, but rather, a personally-directed custom work that expanded to include a premium wooden shoebox and matching iPhone 4 slider case.
