While the NBA was mired in a lock-out, Nike Basketball shrewdly created three on-court and available-for-retail colorways of the Nike LeBron 9 modeled after three big-name collegiate basketball squads – the University of Kentucky, the University of Miami, and the Ohio State University.

It must be nice to have big name sneaker companies vying for your attention via school-specific colorways. The University of Kentucky has been getting a lot of that lately, with the Nike LeBron 9 and now this new colorway of John Wall’s signature sneaker the Reebok Zig Encore shown here. Wall seems better equipped to pay homage since he played ball there and all, and this navy/white colorway does the trick quite nicely.

The Nike LeBron 9 ‘Kentucky’ is set to debut tomorrow , but let’s take a look back at another Nike LeBron Kentucky PE – the Nike Air Max LeBron VII . The Kentucky Wildcats debuted that sick patent-leather PE on February 1st, 2010, when LeBron James himself sat courtside during a game.

What the Duke Blue Devils have been for Kobe Bryant in recent years, we might be seeing from the LeBron James- Kentucky Wildcats union: super-elite global basketball superstar who skipped college entirely hooks up with a traditional powerhouse whose historically blue and white uniforms have added a bit of black in the past decade or so.
